Why Coaching?

Reasons for working with a life coach

A life coach assists others to empower themselves. With this feeling of empowerment they set and meet their own expectations, achieve dreams and even exceed personal and professional goals.

Life coaching can be helpful if you find you are following a pattern that keeps you from things you want or need to do, feeling as if you’re chasing an impossible dream or like you’re not living up to your potential. Some seek life coaching to overcome feelings of low self-worth or confidence, find ways of dealing with being overwhelmed, stressed, stuck in a rut or short of options. Others have the desire to make changes but don’t know where to start and coaching helps them design their path.

However, coaching isn’t only for those who feel stuck, lost or directionless.

Those who have clear goals also get a lot out of working with a life coach. Identifying personal strengths and resources to tap into, recognizing potential obstacles and challenges along the way, and keeping focused and on track are benefits of working with a coach.

What is Coaching?

So, what exactly is coaching?

Simply put, coaching is a structured conversation where the coach asks questions—a lot of questions. These questions are targeted and specific. The intent behind them is to elicit responses from you that will help you guide yourself to set realistic actions, enabling you to achieve whatever it is you want to achieve.

There are several models of coaching, all of which offer a similar process to achieve your desired outcome. It is important that you trust in the process as much as you trust your coach.

The coaching process takes you through six steps:

  1. Identify something you’d like to work on, toward or an outcome you’d like to achieve for a particular situation.
  2. If you have been seeing a coach, reviewing any previous session and the actions you completed to reflect and consider how you’d like to move forward.
  3. Set a goal or identify a particular outcome you would like for the current session.
  4. Consider where you are at the moment with regard to this goal or outcome.
  5. Identify your options for meeting this goal or outcome.
  6. Agree on the actions you will take.
  7. Summarize the session before wrapping up.
What coaching isn’t

Coaching is not therapy or counseling, nor is it mentoring or consulting. A coach does not offer suggestions or advice. They are your sounding board and someone to whom you can be accountable to should that be helpful. You use the coach and the process to move forward with intention and purpose.

Code of Ethics

Each coaching session is confidential. I agree and comply with a strict Coaching Code of Conduct.

What is expected of you

You are expected to come to the session fully prepared and with a goal or aspiration in mind that you would like to work toward and to take action in between sessions. Preparation is very important for the coaching session. I encourage you to spend at least 15 minutes prior to each session thinking about what you want and to become clear about your goal. Note taking is essential and it may be useful to have other items that like a calendar, diary or journal.

How Many Session Will I need?

This is entirely up to you and depends on your unique circumstances. Most people choose an initial package of nine or 12 session for maximum benefit at a lower cost. However, add on sessions to suit your needs are always an option. I recommend placing sessions two-three weeks apart. This will give you time to reflect, take action and make adjustments between sessions.
